Block 9 of the Hamtune Quilt

CASTLE GATE

King William I took control of all lands from the English nobles after he won the crown through the famous victory over Harold I in 1066. He gave Northampton to Simon de Senis and ordered him to build a castle which was completed in 1088. The town walls and castle were torn down by King Charles II as punishment for Northampton's support at the Parliamentarians in the Civil War.
